Incantations

I WEAVE YOU A SASH
I GIVE YOU A RING
I SEND YOU THE OCEAN

I WEAVE YOU A SASH

from the linen i grew in Samogitia soil
from the coil on the sun beaten rock
from the spell that you cast
in love call on spinning wheel mast
from the smell and slumber of pine
from the milk foam of sea and the honey of bee
from the lightening spark that tied me to you
when you said: if i ever lose my head
i still won't forget you
from the deer sprint in fall
from your vigilant hold
from the turn and the burn, my continual yearn
from the light in my eyes, colour of blue
i do, i do , i do

i weave you a sash
from the lilac branch picked
from the calm in your eye and the way you say: pfa
from rise and set of the sun
from dream of white linen spun
from fear shed and love bred, words said and unsaid
from the dawn of afar
from moon wax and candle light glow, stork beak in snow
from petal soft dew
and quiver of voice when you said:
i couldn't bear to lose you

i weave you a sash
from serpent's call on the block
from the stir in the sting
from shadow of passing cloud
from the grain of this bread and the rain on your hair
from the laughter and joy in our step
from a wrinkle on brow
from the legend of sleep
from writing with quill and the way you say: still
from the tear in my eye, silken touch, melt into sigh
from your softness and tender light stare
Spring is in the air

I GIVE YOU A RING
of serpent's coil to uncoil the magic within
from shake of the pen to cover my yen
of snake bite piercing me through
from word tremble cast
of bronze, copper, silver and gold
from my lucid tongue
a Chthonic smile
from the hum of unsaid in fresh broken bread
from blood flow and odour of sweat
of bird caught in a net

i give you a ring
of translucent light
of amber and fine sand
of a journey alone on the highway of bone
of bird spreading wing, a love ballad sung
of flowers so wild to remind you
of child within me
of eyelash on breast and the feeling of zest
from meteoric leap
and ember to keep as you rest within me
from a tear drop in frost
and the petals I tossed
in picking from the forbidden tree

i give you a ring
from rye fields and cornflower blue
of a wreath for my head from green rue
to last forever and this day
from a fawn's first sprint
before first love
and the inevitable fall
as now, when i'm at the brink out of my brain
from clenched fist and the sprinkle
of underworld dew
from the rise of the moon
i have given my sun unto you

I SEND YOU THE OCEAN
wrapped up in cloud
floating before me is shape with no sound
the endless red dunes of the Centre
the sun bleached hills
from this Dreamtime land
beaches of white sand

i take you down the Nyinngi1 trail
to see the warlewurru2 glide
as the Mimi3 figures of Kakadu
and Wandjina4 faces of the Kimberley's hide
the myth of the Rainbow Serpent5 creating this world
of sacred totems
6 to encourage the swirl
of the dreaming within and incarnation without
ghost gums whispering
whispering the secrets of earth
as Obiri Rock opens up to its primordial birth

i show you Uluru7
on the palm of my hand
the kangaroo leap across the bushland strand
with an imaginary walk by the dried-up creek
where goannas and lizards laze in the sun
our Dreaming has just begun
