THE VODOU EXPERIENCE

The Haitian spiritual practices of Vodou have been the subject of misunderstanding and fear for over a century. In the modern age, a greater understanding is dawning of this deeply profound and spiritual religion and its capacity for healing and connection to ancestral roots.

For most the only way to learn about Vodou is to travel to Haiti itself. We are therefore fortunate to be able to present a weekend intensive program by Haitian initiated Mambo Asogwe Paula Jacobs-Wedo and members of her group, the Hounfor du Marche (formed in 1998).

Mambo Asogwe Paula emphasises that Vodou is a practice, not to downplay its spiritual importance, but to emphasise the importance of active service rather than passive belief in Vodou Spirituality. Her services are not inner workings, they are actual and present in the three dimensional world - right here, right now.

While her training was in Haiti, the flavour of the Vodou services she conducts is entirely her own of "South Pacific Vodou". Vodou is very diverse and has no "formal core" as such so under each Mambo the experience can be very unique. To experience totally authentic Haitian Vodou one must travel to Haiti itself!

The objectives of the Hounfor du Marche is to allow people experience the incredible healing and engulfing power of the L'wha, bringing back awareness of the Ancestors and those who have gone before. As singing and dancing are the main acts of worship in Haitian Vodou, participants do this to invite the L'wha to join with them.

TWO AUSTRALIAN EVENTS ONLY

  • Adelaide - from Friday, 7 October to Sunday, 9 October 2005

  • Sydney - Friday, 14 October to Sunday, 16 October 2005

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • The details of the workshop venues and maps will be supplied with receipt of registration. Both events will be held at bushland conference/camping venues with cabin/dorm accommodation and amenities, located in the Adelaide Hills for the Adelaide event, and Silverdale for the Sydney event.

  • Both events will be fully catered and a meat/vegetarian option will be offered. Participants with specific dietary requirements ie lactose intolerance, are encouraged to bring any specific substitute foods for personal use.

  • NO children or pets are permitted. These events are restricted to adults 18 years and over.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

Both weekends will run differently to most Pagan-type gatherings as they focus on learning more about the Vodou tradition, what it is, what it isn't, learning chants, drumming patterns and participating in a Leve Tete ("Baptism of the Head") rite.

As such participants are expected to participate and attend all workshop sessions and the Leve Tete rite in order to build the sense of community and connection that underpins Vodou work. Such work is not about personal gain, rather the mutual support, respect and energy that manifests when the ancestors are invoked as a collective community working together. Such work is also very high energy that can run for many hours, and participants should be prepared for much drumming, dancing, chanting and energy raising for periods longer than they may be otherwise used to.

As Haitian Vodou is actually quite modest with respect to ritual attire, participants will be required to dress accordingly.

This event will also be strictly limited in numbers, so as to allow everyone the opportunity to be a full participant and not a spectator.
