UNDERSTANDING TRUE WILL

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law
Love is the Law, Love under will

Powerful, beautiful yet dangerous words. This is the Law of Thelema as established by Aleister Crowley. Thelema is Greek for "will". Crowley was of the opinion that each of us possesses a true will and it is our task in this life to manifest or fulfil this true will. All sorrow comes from working in opposition to our will. Crowley even went so far as to define magick as being the "… act of causing change in conformity with the Will". To practice magick then, one needs to have a strongly developed Will.

We all have a True Will and it is our purpose in life. Magick is one means to discover the nature of our True Will and to fulfil this inner purpose. At the centre of nearly all forms of magickal practices is the concept of "True Will". But, what is this "Will", and how do we know if you are doing it?

You can read a thousand books or talk to a hundred teachers or even attend as many seminars and workshops as you care to, but if you never apply what you have learnt, it does not do anyone a bit of good. That need for action is essential in life, in spirituality and in magick. The driving, motivating force behind all actions is Will. We all make choices. We all make decisions. We all have our own, unique Will that makes us who and what we are. Your Will is an intrinsic part of you. You Will is the one thing that is truly yours in this life, or rather you are its expression, for your life is the direct consequence of your True Will.

Destiny, fate and karma are all reflections of the True Will. Destiny is the acceptance that the Will is predestined, but in truth it is more open-ended than that. Will is a direction, but we remain free to choose how we accommodate this direction.

At the centre of each of us is our True Will, the essential core of who and what we really are. It is this True Will that shapes our direction in life. Will is the force from within that determines our course. It is like a sun at the centre of our being that sends out rays of light which become our words, our actions and the foundation of our personalities.

Your True Will is your most basic deepest drive. It is the essential force that gives you direction and it is the core around which your personality is built up like rock candy on a string. The True Will is the motivating force behind all our actions, words or thoughts - whether we are aware of our True Will, ignorant of it, or in constant involuntary reaction to it.
